What is CDPM?

Using proactive maintenance techniques to solve common rotating equipment problems.

Flowserve’s Condition Data Point Monitoring program expands data point collection from typical vibration analysis to include other factors, which can lead to premature failure. All data collected can be analyzed and trended using the best technology available. Changes in the trends indicate possible failure or a situation that, if not corrected, could lead to failure and expensive down-time.

Vibration Collection & Analysis

The Vibration Collection and Analysis program monitors the response of the system or equipment to internal and external forces being applied. The response is measured by a general purpose transducer at the pump and motor bearings and is passed to an analyzer for interpretation. The results are downloaded to the asset management software for analysis and recommendations.

Vibration trends indicate problems with:

  • Bearing
  • Cavitation/Recirculation
  • Misalignment
  • Resonance
  • Unbalance

If any of the pre-set levels exceeds an alarm limit, further analysis is performed and a recommendation is made.

Critical Temperature Trending & Analysis

The temperatures collected in predetermined locations on the equipment offer insight into abnormal operating conditions. Sampling points are identified based on equipment type, how critical the equipment is to the process or plant, the repair cost associated with failure, and governmental regulations.
  

Examples of data points monitored include:

  • Bearing temperatures (motor & pump)
  • Mechanical seal environment (seal flush, quench, heat exchanger, reservoir)
  • Process temperatures

The data collected is then downloaded to the asset management software for fast and effective machinery information.

Trigger Point Monitoring

Trigger Point monitoring identifies specific conditions that ultimately lead to premature failure. Through this program abnormal conditions are identified before damage is done to the equipment. Sampling points are identified based on the equipment type, the importance of the equipment to plant operations, the repair cost, and government regulations.
  

The following are examples of data points monitored:

  • Process pressures (including suction, discharge, and seal pressures)
  • Process and seal-related flow rates
  • Reservoir Levels
  • Equipment speed (RPM)
  • Each data point is collected and downloaded to the asset management software for fast and useful machinery information.

Lube Oil Analysis

Lube oil analysis has evolved into a very effective tool in the predictive Maintenance arsenal. Oil analysis offers unique insight into abnormal lubrication and machine conditions. These abnormalities, if left undetected, usually result in catastrophic failures and lost production.

The following tests are included in the analysis:

  • Spectroscopic Analysis
  • Particle Count (wear particle concentration)
  • FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red)
  • Viscosity @ 40 or 100 degrees C
  • KFW (Karl Fischer Water)
  • Analytical Ferrography (when particle count is in alarm)

The results from analysis are collected and downloaded to the asset management software for fast and effective machinery information.

Accessible & Comprehensive Reporting

The reports generated by Flowserve bring the CDPM™ program full circle to provide complete analysis from the data submitted. The reports can be viewed using a standard PC with Internet access; no special software or training is required.

Detailed reports are usually available within three business day and can be reviewed as a web page or Microsoft Word® document.

Each report:

  • Identifies critical problems
  • Recommends corrective action
  • Tracks recommendations
  • Provides a summary report

The information collected can be used in a proactive approach to improve equipment reliability and reduce the overall cost of ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are some of the benefits of CDPM?
A: CDPM's reporting is based on "exceptions," which means that instead of printing data from every piece of equipment within a facility (which could be in thousands), reports are generated on the problem-actors only. This type of trending eliminates the excess data generated by most monitoring systems, which can be too time consuming to evaluate. Focusing in on the problem areas results in a "proactive" maintenance solution. Other major benefits are no customer capital expenditures, reduced training costs, and expert analysis of data.

Q: I have a monitoring system in place already, why would I need CDPM?
A: Many monitoring systems on the market provide incomplete or worse inconsistent data, turning maintenance from a "proactive" solution to a "reactive" effort.

Q: How does CDPM lower my total cost of equipment ownership?
A: The "exception" based reporting allows maintenance personnel to concentrate their efforts on problem areas thereby reducing costly down-time and maintenance expense on "trouble-shooting." Maintenance is performed on an as-required basis at lower cost levels instead of after failures which result in emergency work orders.

Q: How do I access these reports?
A: The worldwide web. All reports will be posted on a secure, password protected website.

Q: What types of equipment can be monitored?
A: The CDPM program can monitor all types of rotating equipment. This includes but is not limited to pumps, fans, turbines, compressors, blowers, agitators, and other shaft driven rotating equipment. The focus must remain on the critical pieces of equipment requiring constant attention and exceptional maintenance practices.

Q: Do I have to buy all of the parts of the CDPM system or can I customize the package to better fit my needs?
A: In order to meet the needs of the customer, each account is analyzed and the proper system is applied. The choice is not so much which type of monitoring is to be applied to the customer need as much as which pieces of equipment are in need of the monitoring solution? The solution to the problem is the choice more than the means to achieve that solution.

A: As a prospective client the first line of contact is your local Flowserve Flow Solutions Representative. This individual is versed in the needs and expectations of the customer and the how the process of CDPM can answer the reliability questions at the client location.
