Flowserve is committed to providing cost-effective solutions for customers’ most critical applications across major infrastructure industries. Unmanned oil platforms, for example, provide pumping solutions for oil and gas clients, while reducing the labor and maintenance costs associated with traditional manned platforms. These unmanned platforms are essential to the cost minimization business model of upstream oil and gas companies. In recent years, public interest has focused more intensely on protection against ecological damage, and particularly on damage to the environment caused by offshore drilling operations. Flowserve Argus valves not only provide cost-effective solutions for one of the industry’s most critical applications, but safer options for offshore operations.

Flowserve was recently called on to supply multiple emergency shut-off valves for an unmanned pumping platform in an oil field in the Gulf of Mexico. A critical feature for both the customer and the environment, the application called for two emergency shut-down valves installed at the wellhead, as well as four more shut-off valves installed at other points in the process. The customer planned to fit the valves with electrohydraulic actuators powered by solar panels.

The customer reviewed proposals from three vendors before selecting Flowserve Argus trunnion mounted metal seated ball valves with three-piece bolted carbon steel bodies for this critical application. The balls and seats of the valves are made of stainless steel with Arguloy, a proprietary coating that is applied at the Flowserve facility in Ettlingen, Germany. With this coating, the valves have a true metal-to-metal sealing, which is resistant to solid materials transported within the fluid. No sealants or grease are required, so the valves are maintenance free. To prevent corrosion in the seat area, an overlay of duplex stainless steel is applied to the body area.

Flowserve has a long history of product quality and on-time delivery with this customer, and, once again, the customer is happy with the performance of their Flowserve products. The Argus valves, designed to help prevent fugitive emissions while minimizing the maintenance schedule, have been in operation since early 2011.
